John Robert Sitlington Sterrett papers, 1872-1914.

Notebooks of John Sterrett, containing his research records from Asia Minor. Includes notebooks containing inscriptions, road notes, field and expense books concerning archaeological expeditions to Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Assos: some notes are in Greek. Also Sterrett's Ph.D. thesis from the University of Munich, 1880: "Eine Untersuchung uber die funf grosseren homerischen Hymen" (Investigation of the five hymns of Homer). "The Life and Times of John Robert Sitlington Sterrett as Revealed in his Letters to Aunts, Uncles & Cousins, his Wife & Daughters, June 24th, 1872 to April 10, 1914," photocopies of family letters typed and edited by his grandson, Kenneth O. Shrewsbury, Jr., 1995.

Sterrett was born in Virginia and educated at the Universities of Virginia, Leipzig, Berlin, Athens and Munich. From Munich he received the Ph. D. in 1880. He was professor of Greek at the University of Texas, 1888-1892, Amherst College, 1892-1901 and Cornell University, 1901-1914. Sterrett lead numerous archaeological expeditions in Asia Minor and authored many books on classical topics.
